Satis script with arrow on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of the word satis in lowercase script runs across the inner wrist, with a thin arrow shaft passing through the letters and an arrowhead at the right end. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits centrally on a light skin tone, with the fingers and palm partly visible at the top of the frame.

You will remember Dad's rule about Latin: one word, one sentence, no more. He wrote satis on the back of the fridge door the summer we got the new car and never explained it. Satis, enough. I am not coming home for Christmas. I know what that does to Mum. But I have a job at the print works on Monday, a room with a radiator that clanks like boots on stairs, and a list of things I have stopped waiting for. Most of them were yours, if I'm honest, the ones about being allowed to leave.
So here is the arrow. I drew it on the back of an envelope this morning, the shaft running straight through the middle of the word with the point facing the way the night trains go. It is not a promise. It is only enough, for tonight, to know which way is forward.
