Fine line black tattoo on the inner wrist of a raised hand, showing an infinity loop with a small cross and the word faith in script with a tiny heart.

Faith infinity symbol with cross on wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

An infinity loop in thin black linework wraps around the script word faith, with a small solid black cross sitting inside the left loop and a tiny heart above the letter i. The lines are even and crisp, with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner wrist, photographed against a plain warm-toned background with the fingers raised at the top of the frame.

Dear Tomasz, the guard at Kestrel Bridge took your letter off me this morning and read every line of it twice, then stamped the back as if it might be contraband. I told him it was only about the weather and the price of paraffin. He didn't smile. He handed it back with one corner folded, and I suppose that is the closest thing to a blessing a border gets.

Mum sends her love and says the loop of wire you bought from Gerda's stall is still on the hook by the door, the one you meant to bend into a ring for the dog's collar and never did. She asked me to tell you the bread has gone stale since you left, and that Father Anton has started sweeping the square himself because the boy who used to do it crossed the river last spring. Nothing here is what it was. Everyone keeps saying so, as if it were news.

Yesterday I walked out to the old toll post with the pencil you left me. On the whitewash there is a mark someone scratched long ago, a cross with a little curl beside it, and I traced it until the lead went blunt. I thought about how you always drew that figure eight lying on its side, the one that never ends, and how you said nothing could be lost if you kept moving along it. I don't believe that any more, not after the winter. I folded the drawing into my coat anyway, next to the heart you put in the margin.

When the crossing opens on the first, come through the lower gate, not the upper. Tell the guard your name is the one written on the back of this page. He will know the hand. Bring nothing you cannot carry under one arm, and bring the wire.
