Small leaf and dot motif on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with French manicured nails, showing a small tattoo on one finger. The design is made of three outlined leaf or petal shapes arranged in a fan, with three solid dots set around them. The linework is thin and black, with no shading or colour, and the motif sits neatly on the finger against a dark background.

Brother Anselm hands you the seed packet without looking up from the ledger, and you know by the set of his jaw that the abbey's cold frame has failed again. You kneel on the sacking and count out the feverfew by hand, because the scale in the scriptorium has been wrong since the winter the roof leaked.

Each seed you press into the trays gets a dot of ink from the pen Anselm lends you, a tiny black mark on the back of the label so the Latin names do not run together. Three petals to a sprig, three dots to a row. He says the old herbalist drew it that way, a fan of leaves opening over the three stones that mark the graves of the first brothers. You tell him that is a pretty story for a man who cannot find his own spectacles.
By Compline the trays are full and the light has gone thin over the wall. Anselm leaves a lamp in the potting shed and a jar of honey on the step, which is how he says thank you. You stay until the bell, pressing your thumb against the cold glass of the frame, and when you finally leave you find one dot of ink still wet on the label you forgot to dry, smudged into the shape of a seed you could not quite place.
