Scallop shell tattoo on the side of the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small scallop shell tattoo sits on the side of a person's chest, close to the armpit and above the edge of a white knit top. The design uses dark, solid black ink with fine outlines and ribbed detail. The photograph is warm and sunlit, with a blurred green background, and the figure's left arm, a metal cuff and rings on the other hand are also visible.

The ferry out of Oban had been half empty since Easter, and Marguerite Doyle had claimed the bench at the stern because nobody else wanted to sit in the diesel. She had a paper bag of cockles from the harbour stall on her knee and a wedge of Mull cheddar she was pretending not to eat. Her brother Callum was up at the rail arguing with a gull about a crisp packet, which was how she knew he was going to be all right.

The shells had been her grandmother's idea of a joke. Every summer at Dunstaffnage, Nan Doyle had walked the tideline with a bucket and come home with scallops, the ribbed fan kind, and lined them along the windowsill like a row of tiny judges. She said a scallop could swim when it was in trouble, flicking itself across the seabed, and that anyone who had ever been frightened ought to keep one on a sill for the reminder. Marguerite had thought this was nonsense until the year her father left, when she found she had been picking up scallops every single morning without deciding to.
By the time the boat docked at Coll, the wind had turned round and the water was the colour of wet slate. Callum came back smelling of salt and chips and sat down heavily beside her. He held out his palm. In it was a scallop no bigger than a fingernail, perfect and unbroken, the ridges still sharp.
"Found it on the slipway," he said. "Thought you'd want the good one."
She took it, turned it over, and laughed until the gull came back to see what the fuss was about.
