Pin-up, muscle car and checkered flag on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pin-up woman with curled hair looks back over her shoulder and holds a wrench, leaning over a muscle car with an SS badge on its grille. A checkered flag fills the lower part of the forearm beneath the car. The work uses smooth shading and fine detail for the hair, car body and flag, with soft highlights across the skin-toned areas.

The starter's flag was already falling when Nell reached the kerb, so she didn't wait for the bonnet to be propped. She leaned over the grille with the wrench still in her fist and shouted the plug gap at Ray through the open window. He nodded without looking at her. Beyond the cones, the black SS was rocking on its springs, rear tyres smoking grey in the cold morning air.

Ray's dad had bought the car from a farmer outside Boston for forty pounds in 1961, with rust bubbling along the sills and the badge half flaked off the grille. Ray had spent every Sunday since bringing it back to life, and Nell had spent most of those Sundays kneeling beside him on a sack, handing him spanners before he asked. She knew which bolt on the manifold would start to sing if it worked loose. She knew he hated being told so. She had learned to keep her mouth shut and her hands busy.

The light went green. The car lurched, shook, and tore off down the quarter-mile with its nose in the air and the crowd's cheering breaking up behind it. Nell counted the seconds on her fingers the way her father had taught her, and when the board flashed, she lost count altogether. Ray came back up the track with one arm out of the window, waving at the marshal's chequered flag as it snapped over the line.

Nell looked down. She had been gripping the wrench so hard that its teeth had printed a row of little marks across her palm. She set it on the bonnet, still warm, and let him have the win.
