Realistic cyborg portrait of a man

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A detailed portrait of a man with short dark hair, shown with his skin torn away on one side to reveal a mechanical eye and metal components. The shading is smooth and realistic, with blue eye detail, red blood-like wounds and dark tones in the hair and collar. Colour ink dominates, and the portrait fills the frame against a plain background.

Dear Nell, you'll say I'm soft for getting the lamp out at gone midnight, but the thing that rolled into the yard on Tuesday had a face like a man who'd lost an argument with a lorry, and he asked me politely to look at it. So I looked.

The skin was peeled back over one cheek like wet card, and underneath sat a dull grey housing with wires bundled into it like a bad dream of a radio. In the middle of it was an eye, blue as a gas ring, and it followed the lamp and then followed my hands. He said it had been rebuilt twice in Ellery and once by a boy in Tonopah who used pliers for everything. I asked him what he wanted fixed. He said the eye was fine. He only wanted the collar of his jacket sponged clean, because the blood on it had dried the colour of old brick and he didn't like being seen like that.

While I worked I found a scratch on the inside of the housing, a name, Maisie, and a date from before the flats went dry. I showed him without thinking. He looked at it the way you'd look at a photograph of a house you used to live in, and for once he didn't say anything at all.

He paid in notes that smelled of petrol and drove east with the sun coming up behind him, one headlamp dimmer than the other. I've kept the wiper blade he left on the bench. Don't tell Dad. Love, Ruth.
