Mrs Okafor's lettering pen had a nib as long as a hatpin, and Dilys had never been allowed to touch it. Every Saturday the old signwriter sat at the back of the shop on Mill Lane with the shutters half down, lettering names onto the glass of the chemist, the bakery and the undertaker's. Dilys swept up the gold leaf offcuts and listened to the scratch of the brush and the tick of the clock above the door.

The job that came in that October was a single word for the window of the tea room at the top of the hill. The owner, a widower named Harold Pringle, wanted it to say what he could not say himself: that the place would close for a month after his wife's funeral, and that people should come back when it reopened. He had written the request on the back of a bus ticket. Pause, he had written, and underlined it twice.

Mrs Okafor took three days over it. She would not hurry the tail of the final letter, she said, because a word that trails off is the only honest kind. On the last afternoon she let Dilys hold the lamp while she drew the long stroke of the P down through the glass, below the line, like a finger pressing on a page to keep it still.

When the paint dried, Harold came up the hill and stood in the road for a long time, reading it. Then he went inside, and for the first time since the funeral he did not put the kettle on. He sat down by the window with his hands flat on the table and watched the light move across the word until the lamp in the shop below went out.
