Script letter C with heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black script letter C with a looped stroke and a tiny outlined heart beside it, tattooed on the inside of a wrist. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The fingers curl in the foreground against a plain wooden table, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

Dearest Odile, the ink from Caddon Reach came up with the Thursday wagon, and it is the good kind, the blue-black that does not bleed when river fog gets into the postbag. I have been practising the capital the way you taught me, the upstroke looped out long so it hangs over the line like a bell rope. By the third page of the tally book my hand was steady enough to be trusted, and Master Lowry has stopped checking my sums behind me.

The royal registry wants every guild seal in the valley redrawn before the spring fair. I was given the cooper's mark, the chandler's, and then, to my surprise, the one for the Saltmere ferrymen, which is only a C with a fishhook through its belly. Mother always said the ferrymen were the only honest men in Ellesmar, so I drew it carefully, the way I would write your name on a parcel. Halfway through I felt the nib catch and lift, and I did a small foolish thing: I set a heart beside the curl, no bigger than a lentil.
Lowry saw it in the morning and said the crown would have my hide. He wanted it scraped from the proof, but the ferrymen have already sent their thanks in a jar of smoked eels, with a note that reads only, Tell the girl the C is kind. So the heart stays, and the proof goes out with it, tucked in the mail for Caddon Reach alongside the spring orders.
Write back soon and tell me whether the river still freezes at the bridge. I am sealing this with the C, heart and all, and I will not be scolding the wax.
