Small ampersand on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black ampersand sits on the inner wrist, slightly towards the forearm. The lines are fine and smooth with a consistent weight, and the letterform has a looping, calligraphic shape. The ink is solid black against pale skin, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

"Cut the word," she said. "Not the arms. The word that holds the two houses together."

He didn't know the letter at first. She drew it on a slate with a stub of chalk: a tall loop, a narrow waist, a tail flicking out like a swallow's. Scribes had written it for centuries, she said, a shorthand for et, and in the old charters it stood between a man's name and his wife's, between a river and its mill.

Tobias worked the chisel through the afternoon, following the curve by feel. When he finished, the stone looked poured rather than cut. Ruth ran a thumb along the join and said nothing for a long time.

The next spring the scaffolding came down and the rest of the castle was still a ruin, but the lintel was whole. Rain gathered in the loop of the letter and ran out through its tail, and wrens nested in the gap above it. Tobias came back once with a child on his shoulders, pointed up at the carving, and told her it meant and. She said it always had.
