Script lettering and arrow on side torso
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A woman lifts the hem of her red vest top to show black script lettering and a small outlined arrow tattooed on the side of her abdomen. The lettering uses bold, smooth linework with grey shading, and the arrow sits just below the words. The photo is taken outdoors in bright light, with her face cropped out of the frame and a lanyard and drink can in view.

Ruth had the sign board propped against the petrol pump when the lorry came up the Hollin road too fast, flinging gravel into the hedges. She had a brush in one hand and a tin of black enamel in the other, and she didn't stop to wipe them. Her uncle Stan would have a fit if the paint ran before the varnish, but Stan was under the Land Rover with a spanner and a bad temper, so the sign was hers to finish.

The lettering had been easy. FOREST across the top in the swoopy hand Stan's late wife had taught her, GARAGE underneath in fat capitals that leaned as if they were hurrying. The arrow was the trouble. Stan wanted it pointing at the forecourt, where sensible drivers turned in. Ruth had drawn it bending the other way, down the lane and into the trees, where the old pit road ran out past the bluebells and nobody went but the badger men and the odd lost tourist.
On Saturday a woman with a can of cider sweating in one hand came up the lane on foot, asking where the Forest Garage was. Ruth pointed with the brush. The woman followed her finger, squinted at the arrow, and laughed. "That's the wrong way," she said. "It's a lovely wrong way, though."
Stan came out wiping grease on his trousers and read the board upside down. He said nothing for a long while. Then he lifted the sign off its nail, carried it to the gate, and hammered it back up pointing down the lane. "Forest first," he said. "Garage after. Let them find us the long way round."
