You take the night shift at the Sandpit Garage because the owner pays in cash and never asks where you slept. By two in the morning the only traffic is lorries grinding up from the salt flats, their running lights strung out like starfighters coming in low over the dunes, and you have started counting them out loud to keep your eyes open.

Dessa, who drives the fuel tanker on the Carrow run, pulls in every Thursday with a thermos and a grievance. Tonight she slaps a stack of photocopied sheets on the counter, each one a grey moon with a dish-shaped crater, and says her brother has been drawing it on the back of invoices again. He calls it the one that was never supposed to fire. She taps the crater with a bitten nail and says it looks like an eye that has forgotten how to shut.

You pour her coffee and tell her the sheep in the back field have got out again, because you saw them on the verge at dusk, wool the colour of old chalk, wandering toward the cattle grid. Dessa laughs and says that is the most sensible thing anyone has said on this road all year, then walks out into the dark and leaves her thermos behind.

When the first light comes up over the flats you find the thermos on the bench, still warm, with a cardboard tag tucked under the lid stamped with a small green sheep. You pocket the tag, lock the till, and go out to find the flock, counting them one by one as the sun clears the dunes.
