Metallic temporary arm bands
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two forearms show metallic silver and gold temporary tattoo designs made of bands and ornamental motifs, including circular and geometric patterns. The linework is fine and uniform, with flat metallic fill rather than shading. The wearer sits cross-legged in light denim overalls, and the arms are framed against a patterned blanket in bright sunlight.

The lamp room is hot by noon, so you climb the iron stairs before the sun gets high and sit on the gallery with the tin your cousin posted from Penzance. Inside lie sheets of pale foil, each one a ring of ornament or a band of tiny lozenges. Your father is below, grumbling at the fog horn's bearing, and the tide is out over the rocks, so there is nothing to do but dress up for no one.

You peel the backing from a mandala the size of a shilling, press it face down, and rub with a damp cloth until the pattern lifts clean. The metal catches the glare off the water and throws it back at the great lens, so for a moment the whole gallery flickers as though the lamp has been lit in daylight. You add a second band, then a geometric one, stern and precise, until the metal sits on you like something borrowed from a trader who left it on a rail for the wind to take.
In the afternoon a fishing smack comes round the point with a red sail, and the skipper raises a hand at the flash of it. You have no idea whether he can make out the pattern from there. You hold the pose anyway. He takes a long time to look, then nods, as if you had signalled something he has been waiting to hear.
That evening the foil will come away in the bath, grey and curling, and the tide will creep back over the rocks. But you keep the thinnest band, and you wear it up the stairs to where the lamp is waiting. The beam goes round and round, and each time it passes, something small gleams back.
