Script lettering and two swallows on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a fine line script word on the forearm, with two small solid black swallow silhouettes flying beside it, one at the end of the lettering and one higher up to the right. The script is drawn in a thin, even black outline with no shading. The ink is black against warm skin, and the photo shows a teal and grey background at the top and bottom edges.

Dear Tomas,

The swallows came back to the gallery rail on Tuesday, eleven of them, and the first thing they did was squabble over the nest under the lamp housing where your old pair raised three broods. Mam says they know the way home better than the post does. I have stopped trying to shoo them off. Nobody is here to mind but me and the gulls.

The rock station is quieter since the relief boat stopped coming on Fridays. I wind the clockwork every four hours, log the glass, and count the seals off the landing. Last week a young swallow flew into the lamp room glass and dropped onto the floor like a thrown glove. I held it in my cupped hands until it remembered it had wings. It lifted out over the rocks, low at first, then higher, and I shouted the word you taught us when we were small, the one for going on, and felt daft doing it alone on a rock with no one to hear.

I have copied the word onto the back cover of the logbook so I can see it when the fog comes in. Write and tell me what it means properly, because the man at the chandler's only laughed when I asked him, and you always did have the better memory for our rubbish.

I am leaving the seaward shutter open tonight so anything coming in off the water can find the light. If the swallows are still on the rail in the morning, I will tell them you said hello.

Your loving sister, Nessa
