Infinity symbol with faith and birds on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a looping infinity symbol with the word faith written in flowing script across its right loop, with heb 11:1 in small lettering beneath. Three bird silhouettes in solid black sit above the infinity symbol. The linework is thin and even, with the birds filled in more heavily, and the photograph is shot in black and white against a window blind.

Tom, the swifts came back to the chimney on Tanner Street on Tuesday, three of them, and I counted twice to be sure. Mum would have called it a sign. I was going to write that down so you could scoff at me properly, but then the bus came and I missed my stop and walked the long way past the canal.

You asked in your last letter how I manage without you on the night shifts. The truth is I stand at the back window with the blind half up and watch the lights on the ring road like they're a sum that comes out the same every time. Gran's Bible is still on the shelf by the kettle, with the page she kept folded down at Hebrews. You remember the line she underlined so hard the pen went through: now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
I used to think that was just a fancy way of saying hope. Then I sat up with Gran at Easter, when she couldn't tell the nurses what day it was. She held my wrist and traced the loop of the ink I'd had done the week you left, the one with the birds, and she said, that's a thing that goes round, love, it doesn't end. I don't know if she meant the faith or the swifts or the little word in the middle. I think she meant all of it, the way she always did.
Come back for the summer. Bring the bad coffee and the good stories. The window's still cracked on the left, so bring the tape.
