Short script line on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a woman seen from behind, with her hair in a loose ponytail and a white open-back top with thin straps. A small black script tattoo sits centrally across the upper back, and a smaller dark motif is visible lower down on the left side of the back. The image is shot outdoors against a blurred city background in soft daylight, with the tattoos as the clear focus.

The letter was folded inside a Penguin paperback that Ruth bought for a penny at a church jumble in Margate, and the first thing she noticed was the handwriting, which leaned forward as if it were late for something. It was dated the third of October 1953 and began without a greeting: Don't wait up for the six-forty again. The boat is full of men who have stopped saying goodbye properly, and I have decided to be one of the ones who does. The key is under the thwart on the slip. Feed the gulls only on Sundays, they know the difference.

Ruth walked down to the harbour the next morning with the book in her coat pocket. The boat was still there, pulled up on the shingle with its name half scraped off, and the key was where the letter said, rusted into a crack beneath the seat. In the bilge, wrapped in oilcloth, was a second letter in the same slanting hand, dated the following April. It said only that the Ostend crossing had been rough, that the girl at the tea stall had married a Dutch engineer, and that the gulls had been fed every Sunday regardless.
She read it twice, sitting on the upturned crate where the writer must once have sat, and then she tore a crust from the bread in her bag and threw it towards the wall. A gull dropped out of the grey and took it. Ruth folded the second letter back into its oilcloth, slid it into her pocket beside the first, and wondered whether it was Sunday.
