Vertical script tattoo down the back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long wavy blonde hair sits on a light wooden floor with her back to the camera, wearing a white backless dress with lace trim. A thin black script of several lines runs vertically down the centre of her back, with the text only partly legible. The ink is solid black on a warm skin tone, set against a bright, softly lit white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Nell Bayford had loaded her brush three times before the bride's mother stopped hovering by the window. The commission was a single strip of washi, nine inches wide and four feet long, and the words had to run top to bottom, because the bride had been specific about that. Her late father's handwriting had always slanted down the back of his letters, she said, and she wanted the vows to lean the same way.

Nell worked on the cutting mat with the paper weighted at both ends by brass tins of pencils. Sumi ink held a line well if you did not hurry it, and the spacing was the real difficulty. Each character needed its own breath, its own small pause, or the eye would snag on the join between them. She wrote the first lines without looking up, then stopped at the fourth, where a tremor had crept into the stroke and bled a little at the edge. She stared at it for a long minute. Then she decided the flaw belonged there, and went on.
"Will anyone be able to read it?" the mother asked, when the last line was finished and the strip was hung to dry.
"Only the people close enough to want to," Nell said. "That's how it's meant to be."
The paper dried slowly, the ink settling into a matte black that caught the window light. By four o'clock the bottom line had lost its shine, and the whole strip looked less like a message than a path someone had walked down with great care. Nell rolled it loosely in acid-free tissue and wrote the bride's name on the tube in pencil, small and upright, the only thing she had written all afternoon that did not lean.
