Mr Abernethy never let me paint the capitals first. He said a capital was a door, and you did not open a door before you knew what lay behind it, so I learned the small letters, the tails and loops, on scrap oak at the back of the shop while the tide came in under the quay and the gulls argued over the fish heads.

The commission arrived in October from a widow in Leith who wanted a name for her late husband's yawl. She had written it in pencil on the back of a tide table, and the grey had smudged where her thumb rested. Abernethy studied it under the lamp for a long while. Then he took a sable brush no longer than my finger, dipped it, and told me to watch the join between the words, because that was where a hand gave itself away.

We finished the board on the Friday. The yawl was to be called Lesser Hope, which Abernethy thought unlucky and the widow thought exactly right. On the Saturday she came to collect it herself, carrying a small triangle of brass she wanted fixed beneath the lettering, a point of light to mark the boat's place on the chart. I drilled the holes while she watched. She paid in coins, counted them twice, and walked out into the wind without once looking back at the board, which is the finest thing a customer can do for a sign.
