The letter arrived at Mrs Pargeter's counter in Margate on a Tuesday, sealed with a blob of wax that had cooled crooked. Inside, the hand was so fine she had to tilt the page to the window to be sure of it. Dear Iris, it began, and then, in a flourish that nearly ran off the edge of the paper, Fish Stories, which was how Ray had always signed off when he'd been fibbing about the size of his catch.

She had not seen her brother in eleven years. He had gone off to learn penmanship from a man in Lisbon who, Ray claimed, had once lettered the signs for a circus, and then he had gone to Brighton, and then to nowhere she could name. Now he wrote that he was working on a sheet of alphabets for a sign-painter's shop in Bristol, and that he wanted her opinion on the lowercase g, which had been giving him trouble all month. He had enclosed a rough copy. The loop of its tail curled back under itself twice, like a ribbon someone had tied and then thought better of.

She read the letter three times at the counter, then folded it into her apron pocket and sold a woman a tin of barley sugar without once asking what she wanted. That evening she wrote back with a pencil, circling the g and drawing an arrow to a spot she thought looked lazy. Under it she wrote, in her plainest capitals, COME AND SEE IT YOURSELF. Then she posted it before she could cross anything out.
