Script lettering heart tattoo
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a heart-shaped tattoo made from flowing cursive script in black ink. The letters are thin, even lines with loops and swashes, and the word shapes fill the heart outline. The skin tone is warm and the image has a light glare over the upper section, with the design centred in the frame.

Dear Tom, the kettle has boiled dry twice since Tuesday, so you can tell Mr Ashby at the chandlery that I have not forgotten the order for his ropes, though I have forgotten most else. Mother has taken to standing at the back step each evening with the washing basket empty on her hip, waiting for a van that never turns into Crane Street. Yesterday I found her at the table with your old school pen, copying out the loops of her own name over and over on the back of the rent book, like a schoolgirl trying to make a good impression on someone who has already left the room.

I did not scold her. I sat down opposite and took the pen, and between us we wrote the three words Dad used to say when the tide was up and the pier was full of gulls: live, laugh, love. He always ran them together as one thing, one long line of ink that never lifted, and Mother said that was the only honest way to write anything. We shaped them into a heart on the rent book. It looked daft. She laughed properly for the first time since March, then she cried, then she laughed again, and I think that was the whole point of it.
So come home at Whitsun if the boats let you. Bring the good tea from the docks and your ugly grin. We will pin the rent book to the nail by the door, where the window light catches the swoops and the gaps between the letters, and nobody who comes in will know it was only ever a bill.
Your loving sister, Nell
