A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy Pask had lettered shop fronts along the Margate front for thirty-one years, and she had never once been asked to spell something she considered beneath a good sable brush. So when Terry Vokes from the chippy came in on a wet Tuesday with a dented bin lid under one arm and a fiver folded into the coffee tin, she only sighed and reached for her ink.

"Fancy script," he said. "Proper Victorian. Says Gum Dumpster." "Anything else on the order?" "Not that I was told."

She carried the lid to the bench by the window, where the light came off the harbour in sheets, and laid down the first loop of the G as fine as a hair. Her mother had taught her that a good script should look as though it had never been hurried, and she made every stroke look that way while Terry watched the gulls fight over a discarded cone.

The bin went up outside the Bright Smile Arcade the next morning, and by teatime half the promenade had photographed it. Nobody could decide whether it was an insult or a dare. The arcade's owner, Marisol Byrne, who chewed nicotine gum by the packet, rang Dorothy twice to ask who had paid for it, and twice Dorothy said she could not say.

On Friday she walked down to look for herself. The lid was already scuffed, and someone had written underneath in small biro capitals, NOBODY ELSE WOULD HAVE BOTHERED. Dorothy read it twice, tucked her brush behind her ear, and went home without saying a word to anybody.
