Dinosaur tattoo on inner lower lip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a small tattoo of a long-necked dinosaur on the inner surface of a lower lip, with the mouth held open by fingers at either side. The design is drawn in a single black outline with no shading or fill, and the creature faces left with a long neck and a row of spiky back plates. The pink lip tissue and the teeth above form the background, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The shift whistle went at six this morning and I was still at the kitchen table with the lamp, going over the shale you sent me from the north face. Dad says you'd have it in a glass case by now. I've drawn the thing instead, because the stone is going to the colliery office and nobody there will look at it twice. It has a neck as long as a bell rope, a head no bigger than a walnut, and a row of plates down its back like the teeth of a comb. I went over the outline three times in ink so it would hold. I left the belly out. There wasn't one left in the rock.

Mr Hargreaves came down the drift on Thursday with a crowbar and said the seam was the only thing in Sallow Green worth a penny, and that a bit of old lizard would not put bread on anyone's table. I didn't argue. I only asked him to let me keep a copy. He laughed and said I could keep whatever I could carry out in my apron, so I did, and the stone is still in the wash house under the sacks.

Mam says I'm to stop filling the back of the Bible with beasts. But the thing has been walking about in my head since I saw it, the way the ground still rocks when you come off the water. I think it knew where it was going, Tom, even with all that stone on its back.

Write when the post reaches you. Tell me if they have any of them down south, the big ones, the ones that ate whole trees before there were any roads.

Your sister, Nell
