Every spring the fair came over the hill on the Thursday after the lambing, and every spring old Tobiah Crane painted the names on the caravans himself, because nobody else in the county could make a letter lean the way a travelling man leans. The girl who came to him that year had printer's ink on her fingers and a stripe of soot across one cheek. She asked him to paint a word she had never seen written, and when he asked what it meant she said it was the name of the place her mother had gone to after the flood.

He painted it on the wagon boards without argument. The letters ran down the side in black and grey, thin as a hair, and when he stood back he saw the last stroke had a little tail that had not been in his hand. He said nothing. Fairs learn early that some things are already there before the brush comes near them.

That night the striped awning over the big wheel billowed out and sagged again, and a brass bell rang twice in the dark though nobody was near it. In the morning the girl was gone, and on the wagon, close to the hinge where a hand would catch to climb in, a small black triangle had appeared where the paint had run.

Crane never tried to scrub it off. He told the children that a fair is a door that opens only one way, and that anyone who walks through it carries a mark to show which road they took.
