Script lettering reading Always Love on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two lines of cursive script: Always Love on the upper line and Hate will get you every time below it. The lettering is drawn in fine, consistent black linework with smooth flowing strokes and some looping capitals. It sits on smooth skin on the upper back, with a plain pale background and a small amount of dark hair visible at the top edge.

Dilys wanted the second line in the same copperplate as the first, and Gwen told her so twice before she dipped the brush. Always Love went down easily enough, the loop of the L swinging out like a skipping rope. The other line Gwen made Dilys read aloud while she worked, so she could hear how it sounded in the voice of a woman who had been married thirty-one years to a man who snored like a ferry.

Hate will get you every time, Dilys said, and laughed, and then stopped laughing, because her husband Ron had come in from the yard with sawdust on his cap and was watching the board over her shoulder. He had ordered a sign for the boat shed and got this instead, a joke the two of them had shared since the Coronation. Gwen kept her wrist loose on the g in get. Ink does not forgive a shaking hand, and she had already spent one board on a wobbly capital that morning.
When the paint was dry Ron carried the board down to the shed himself and hung it above the door. Gwen heard later that he stood underneath it for most of an hour with his cap in both hands, and that he had not once told anyone the joke was about him.
The following Tuesday Dilys came back for the brushes she had left behind. She wanted the lettering copied onto a strip of card, both lines, for her sister's wedding. Gwen wrapped the card in tissue, wrote the sister's name on the back in the same looping hand, and did not look up to see whether Dilys was smiling.
