Script lettering running down a leg

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A pair of legs in a pink mesh dress and gold strappy heels is shown against a dark, reflective floor. Several lines of black handwritten script run down the outer side of the leg from the upper thigh towards the knee, and the text is too small to read clearly. The ink is solid black with fine, even strokes, and the image is framed tightly on the legs.

Sit there on the flour sack and mind the oven door, because my mother always said dawn bread knows when it's being watched. I'll tell you about the letter while the dough rests.

It came into the bakery in the winter of the great frost, folded small and tucked inside an empty tin of lard. Written down the side of the paper in black ink, the lines ran from the top corner almost to the bottom, the way a stream runs off a hill, and nobody on Millgate Street could make out more than the odd capital. Tallow Ada swore it was Welsh. The vicar said it was Latin gone wrong.

My grandfather took it up to the room above the ovens, where the heat keeps a man honest, and sat with it until the bells struck four. When he came down he had flour to the elbows and a face like a shut door. He never said what it said. He only asked for the good scissors and cut a loaf down its length, one long slash, the way you'd score a line on a page.

So we bake it still. Every Sunday, one loaf with that long cut, and the letter stays folded in the tin where the warmth keeps it soft. Mind your hands, lad. Some words are only meant for the oven.
