Script lettering on upper arm and forearm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A cropped photograph of a person's midriff, white ripped crop top and tan leggings, against a plain white textured wall. A small fine black script word sits on the upper arm, partly cropped at the top of the frame, and a second line of script runs along the forearm near a thin bracelet. The lettering is in black ink with no shading, and the background is neutral, so the tattoos are the focus.

Dear Tomasz, the damp has got into the tea caddy again, so forgive the smell of the paper. Your mother has finished the second volume of the dictionary and wants you to know she has reached the letter M, which she says is where all the trouble starts. The flood took the bottom shelf of the workshop in March, and Mr Aske at the bindery has been very decent about it, though he keeps asking whether we want the swollen pages pressed or thrown on the fire.

We have pressed them. Your mother sits at the bench with a magnifying glass and a pot of Indian ink, copying out each word the water blurred, and some mornings she gets three done and some mornings she gets none. Last Tuesday she made me read the entry for mercy aloud four times because she said the ink on her hands had made the vowels look like a different family. I told her a dictionary is only a list of people who agreed to stand in the same order, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the coal scuttle.
I found the word you wanted at the back, folded inside the cover where you hid your sea letters as a boy. It was in your handwriting, small and slanting, and I have copied it onto the front of this envelope so you will know it is safe. Bring the shipping papers when you come home, and bring the second pair of boots, because the lane is mud again and I am not carrying you up it on my back. Mother says the M section will be finished by midsummer. Keep the ink dry and the page turned down where you left it.
Your sister, Edie
