Script name Jesse with yellow ribbon on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo spells the name Jesse in black flowing script, with a looping flourish running beneath the letters. A yellow ribbon sits above the J, with a small gold mark beside it. The ink is slightly soft-edged and shaded on the letters, and the photograph shows the design centred on a forearm against a dark background.

Dolly Ashby had pinned the yellow ribbon to the lapel of her good coat before the bus, and by eight o'clock at the Palais it had gone soft at the edges from her thumb. The band had started on 'Moonlight Serenade' and the floor was thick with couples doing the quickstep badly. She kept her back to the door. Every man in a navy jacket made her look twice.

The dance card on her wrist had one name left on it, written in the flourishing hand of the pianist's brother, who sold the tickets and had no business owning such a pen. Jesse, it said, in long black loops, with a tail that swept under the letters like a wave pulling back off the sand. He had signed it at the door in March, the week before the convoy. She had not danced with him. She had only watched him cross the room with his cap in his hands.
At half past nine the bandleader called the last waltz and the lights dropped to amber. Dolly stood up. Nobody came to claim the card, so she tore the strip off, folded it twice, and walked it out to the lamp post at the corner of Chapel Street where the wind off the reservoir pulled at everything. She tied it there with the ribbon, one loop, then another, the way her mother had tied dishcloths to the line.
A letter came in the morning, not from him but from his sister, one line in pencil: he had asked after the dance card. Dolly read it standing on the step, then went back out in her slippers to see whether the knot had held.
