Script name tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a woman's inner wrist showing a single word tattooed in cursive script, reading Alivia. The linework is thin and even, with a looping capital A and a flowing connecting stroke. The ink is solid black with no shading, set against pale skin, a blue denim sleeve and a dark car interior.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada Penhallow had lettered boat names for thirty years and never once got a capital A to sit right on a wet hull. Her father had taught her to lay the first stroke fast and let the second follow it round like a skater, and she had done that for every fishing smack in Newlyn, but the Alivia was different. Her owner wanted the name in a hand so fine it looked written by a schoolgirl on a birthday card, and he wanted it gold on the transom by Saturday.

She worked in the net loft with the doors open to the gulls. The first A came out too heavy, a blot like a thumbprint, and she scraped it off with the edge of a razor and tried again. The second stood up straight. By the third she had stopped thinking about the men who would crew the boat and started thinking about the girl the name belonged to, whom she had never met, who was apparently called after a grandmother and would one day stand on this quay and read it.
On Saturday the boat went out on the morning tide, and Ada watched from the harbour wall as the sun caught the gold. The loop of the A flared across the transom like a line paying out over the water. Nobody had asked her opinion, and nobody needed to know that she never lettered a name without carrying it around in her head for days afterwards.
