It was written in a hand so looped and sloping that she had to read past the ornaments to reach the words. Dear Hettie, it began, and then came a catalogue of small things: the ferry timetable at Ullswater, a dog that would not stop barking at the post van, the price of coal in Kendal. Nothing a stranger would need to hide. Only at the bottom, under a long swooping line that ran off the edge of the page like a sledge track, the writer had signed off with a single word and nothing after it.

Always.

Nell sat on the bare mattress and thought about how one word could be a promise or a full stop, depending on who was holding the pen. Somebody had sat in this room in a hard winter, writing to someone who might never read it, and had chosen to end on the thing they could not take back.

The lane would open by Thursday, the plough man had promised. Nell folded the letter along its creases, tucked it into her apron pocket and went down to the bar to ask Mrs Pell at the post office whether a Hettie Garside still lived in Sedbergh. If she did, the letter would arrive late, but it would arrive.
