Infinity symbol with family script on foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A fine grey infinity symbol loops across the top of a foot, with the word family written in cursive script through its right-hand loop. A small heart sits above the i. The linework is clean and even, with soft grey shading along the lower curve of the infinity loop, and the design is centred on the instep with the toes visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dora Quayle had spent eleven winters in the rope walk behind Porthcarrow harbour before her father let her splice a grommet, the endless ring of laid rope that has no start and no end. He turned it under the lamp and told her a good join hides where it began. She counted every tuck aloud, over and under, until her thumb could find nothing but the lay.

The old men on the quay swore a ring like that had held the Mary Lowe together in the gale of 1911, when she was lashed with nothing but a loop and a prayer. Dora did not believe them, though she liked how they told it, leaning on the bollards with their caps pushed back. Her father only said that rope remembers how it was made, which was the sort of thing he said when he meant something he would not repeat.
When her brother Tom came home from Newlyn with a sea-chest and a silence that lasted a month, she spliced him a bracelet from tarred marline and told him to keep it until the tar went grey. He laughed and kept it on. Each evening she saw him turn the ring with his thumb, the way her father had turned hers, and she understood that the thing was less about the rope than the turning.
The tar went grey by the autumn. Tom sailed on the Sparrow with the tide and came back on the next, and when the bracelet finally frayed at the join she did not cut it off. She unlaid the old splice, found the place where it had begun, and wove the new one over it, so the first tuck was still underneath the last.
