Mr Ferris kept the type cases in the back room of the Lantern Ballroom, under a gas lamp that hummed like a wasp, and on the Saturday before the Harvest Hop he let me set the dance cards because my hands were steady and I could space a line without counting it. Forty cards, all in Caslon, all to be trimmed by four o'clock.

The bandleader had sent a list of tunes, and between 'Moonlight Serenade' and 'Stardust' he had written in pencil: give them a breath here, Ada, or they'll trip over each other. Ferris wanted nothing fancy. I set a small heart in the margin, drawn with the rule, and then, without asking, a semicolon beside the two titles, its dot and its curl sitting right where the heart's curve turned. Ferris looked at it over his spectacles for a long time.

'Nobody reads punctuation on a dance card,' he said. 'They read the tunes.' But that night I watched from the balcony rail as the caller stood at the edge of the floor with his card. When the last note of the first tune faded, he lifted one finger and waited. The couples stopped, looking at each other, and a little cheer rose from the tables as everyone drew breath together before the next tune began.

Ferris printed the rest without changing a thing. Years later, when the Lantern was pulled down for flats, a man sent me a card he had pulled from the rubble, grey at the edges, and the semicolon was still there, a small hinge in the middle of the line.
