Script name with heartbeat line on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the word Hunter in a thin, cursive script, with a heartbeat trace running into the lettering and a small outlined heart at the left end. The linework is fine and even, with minimal shading, and the ink is a single dark grey or black. The photograph is taken close up in black and white, with the tattoo centred on a smooth area of skin.

Your trace is in there, running down the middle of the strip, where the needle wandered off the first night and then settled back into something ordinary. Every time the porter came in with his terrible jokes you jumped, and the line leapt up like a trout taking a fly. Near the start of the paper I drew a little heart, the way you drew one on the playroom window with your finger, and the needle ran straight through it as though it had somewhere better to be.
They say you can go home on Friday. Your mum is already ironing the blue shirt you will refuse to wear. The consultant looked pleased, though he would never say so with the drip still taped to your arm.
Take the strip home and fold it into the back of your reading book. When you are out on the fells with that dog of yours and everything seems very loud, unfold it and look at the line. It was drawn by something that wanted to keep going, and it still does. Love, Nan.
