Script quote across the back of the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of the back of a person's neck, with their hair pulled up, showing a three-line quote in a flowing script. The lettering is outlined and filled in dark ink, with even line weight and neat spacing between the lines. The text is centred on the neck against a plain white top and a softly blurred indoor background.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly spent and I'll not tell this twice. Your grandmother's people had the big top then, red and gold, with the elephants walking in from the railway siding in a line you could hear before you saw them. This was the autumn the Calloway and Strand ran out of money in a Lincolnshire field, and the only act left that still paid was Maud Ferriter on the high trapeze.

Maud had a catcher called Tobias Lund, hands like shovels and never once a drop. Every night she swung out, and every night she let go of the bar with the whole house holding its breath, and every night his hands closed on her wrists as if the world had been built for that one purpose. Folk called that love. Folk call a great many things love when they have never hung upside down over sawdust.
The wind took the canvas in October. The company split like a bad loaf, and Tobias took a berth on a coaster out of Hull with a carpet bag and no forwarding address. On the last morning in that field he came to Maud's wagon and said, "Let go, then, if you're going to." She had the old canary in its wicker cage, the one that had ridden every tour since Leeds. She opened the little door, watched it hop to the sill, and then it was up into the grey cloud over the hedge.
She never did write to him. What she did was copy his words onto the back of a torn playbill and keep it folded in her coat until the paper went soft as cloth. Pass me the lamp now, and mind the wick, for that's the whole of it.
