Script quote across the lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two lines of black cursive script read Never a victim, Forever a fighter, with the second line sitting slightly lower than the first. The lettering uses smooth, even linework with soft shading in the letter strokes. The tattoo sits horizontally across bare skin above the waistband of blue denim, with a brick wall visible at the top left of the frame.

The brush was already loaded with black enamel when Tom Scrase first saw the wall. The board for the Harbour Street Boxing Club had been measured wrong, and the first line, in Mrs Pryce's looping hand, had run right to the edge of the render before he came down the ladder with the pot.

"Drop the second line," she said, without turning round. "Let it sit lower. The eye needs somewhere to land after the first one." He argued, because the chalk guide said level, and she told him guides were written by people who had never had to fit a sentence to a wall that curved.

They worked through the afternoon with the radio on low. She pencilled the words once more to be sure of the spacing, then went over them with a fine sable while Tom held the lamp. He learned the long down-stroke of the f, how to keep the tail of the r from clotting, and that the trick with a flourish was to stop before you were pleased with it. The club's owner, a heavy man called Desmond Ketch, had paid for the lettering in cash and asked for only two things: the wording, and that it be readable from the bus stop.

When the last stroke had dried, Tom stood in the road and read it from the kerb. The lower line did exactly what she had said it would. A bus slowed at the stop, and a girl with a kitbag over one shoulder looked up, read the wall twice with her lips moving, and then pushed open the door underneath it.
