A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every travelling fair keeps a woman who reads the future for a coin, and at Saint-Aubin that woman was Mère Gaspard, who kept a green caravan behind the carousel. The village children said she had once lost a wager to the Devil over a barrel of cider, and that he had taken her regrets as payment, which was why she never carried any. The children repeated this on the dodgem track until the autumn the fair packed up and drove away without her.

Her apprentice, a boy called Tibault who sold toffee apples from a handcart, found the caravan door unlatched and the kettle still warm. On the table lay a single sheet covered in a looping hand, the same five words written over and over, each line smaller than the one before, as if she had been trying to fit them onto a coin. He could not read the words, so he carried the sheet to the schoolmaster, who held it to the window and read them slowly aloud.

Tibault waited for the Devil to appear in the story, but the schoolmaster only folded the paper and set it on his desk. "She has stopped counting," he said, and that seemed to be the whole of it.

The next spring the schoolmaster pinned the sheet to the noticeboard outside the church. Rain got into the glass case that spring and again the following year, and the paper softened and grew grey, until only the bottom line was legible: a row of dark letters running slantwise across the cork, still curling as if someone had just lifted the pen.
