Script quote across the lower back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two lines of black cursive script read Never a victim, forever a fighter, set across the lower back above the waistband of blue jeans. The lettering is crisp with smooth, even strokes and little visible shading. The image is a close crop on bare skin with a brick wall partly visible at the top left.

The rain came sideways off the river and you had the sign half-painted before the stallholders on either side had their tarpaulins up. Mrs Adeyemi's fishmonger's board had already split along the grain, and she stood under the eaves with her arms folded, watching you mix black enamel with a jam jar of turpentine as if it were a card trick she intended to catch you at. "Nobody reads a sign in this weather," she said. You told her the rain only made people read faster.

Your brush was a number-two sable you had owned since art college, and you worked the letters the way your uncle taught you: slow down the strokes, lift at the end, never fuss a curve twice. The first line went on in a looping hand. The second you saved for when the market bell rang at noon and the crowd thinned to the people who meant to stay. Water ran off the brim of your cap and dripped into the vowels, so you tilted the board and waited.
By one o'clock the sign hung between two poles above the cheese stall, the letters wet and dark against the grey brick. Mrs Adeyemi read it aloud, slowly, the way she read invoices. Then she laughed, a short bark, and said she would have it done on her own apron.
You packed the brushes into the tin and walked home without an umbrella. The wet ran down your collar as if it had somewhere better to be, and the words stayed on the board behind you, drying in the cold, where anyone passing could read them.
