The image shows a black ink script tattoo reading 'Because I'm a Lady, that's why' in flowing cursive capitals and lowercase letters. The linework is clean and of even weight, and the text runs in a gentle upward curve across the skin. The photo is a close crop with a blurred gold ornate frame in the foreground and dark fabric at the top edge.

Mrs Opaline Beck had been asked why she kept three geese on the eleventh floor of Harrowgate House, and she had answered, as she answered everything, with her chin up. "Because I'm a lady, that's why." The caretaker wrote it on his clipboard anyway, underlining it twice, because the bins had been left in the lift again and somebody had to be blamed.

Nobody could argue with it, which was the trouble. When the council sent a man in a grey anorak to measure the balconies, she made him tea in the good cups and let him talk about tolerances for a full hour, then asked him why he had not taken his shoes off at the door. He said he hadn't thought to. "Because you're a gentleman, that's why," she said, and he went home that night pleased with himself and unable to say what had been decided.
The geese were never a problem after that. The lift stopped smelling of feathers, the tenants on the fourth floor stopped complaining about the noise, and the caretaker, who had grown up near a canal, began to bring her bread from the bakery on Tuesdays without being asked. When he finally asked her, over the rail with the wind coming up off the car park, why she had bothered with the bread, she looked down at the lit windows below and said nothing for so long he thought she had not heard.
"Because I'm a lady," she said at last, and her geese came honking up the stairwell to meet her, "that's why."
