Script quote across the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A two-line quote in black cursive script runs across the side of the ribcage. The lettering uses even, medium-weight linework with soft, slightly feathered edges. The image is entirely black ink and skin tones, with a white lace garment covering the top edge of the frame.

Ola had been told the bridge at Marrow Ford would bear a loaded cart, and she believed it until the third plank gave under the near wheel and the mare stopped dead above the black water. Ola sat on the box with the reins slack and thought of every bad thing the road had ever shown her.

Her aunt Vesna came down the bank with a lantern and a coil of rope and no patience at all. "Stop making that face," she said. "Fear is a poor driver. It always wants the cart to go where it's already looking." She tied one end of the rope to the axle and the other to her own waist, then sang the carters' song about the hare who crossed the frozen lake. It was a long song with too many verses, and somewhere around the ninth the mare, out of sheer embarrassment, put one hoof forward and then the other.
They reached the far bank as the moon came out. Vesna did not wait to be thanked. She unknotted the rope, coiled it over her shoulder, and said only, "The bridge is still standing. So are you. Write that down somewhere."
Ola wrote it in chalk on the inside of the tailboard, where she would see it every morning when she loaded the cart. Years later, when the bridge finally went in the spring flood, the board was the only thing from that cart the water did not take, and the words were still there under the mud: let your faith be bigger than your fears.
