Script quote across the top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a black script quote across the top of a bare foot, written in two lines with the second line running beneath the first. A looping flourish and a comma-like mark finish the end of the phrase. The ink is solid black with smooth, even linework on pale skin, set against a dark background.

The lift at Harrow Point had been broken since the spring, so Maud Eccles carried her shopping up fourteen flights every Thursday and told the stairwell what she thought of it. Nobody answered. The concrete kept its own counsel, and the pigeons on the landing had long since stopped moving out of her way. One Thursday a boy from the seventh floor, Kwame, sat on the bottom step with a bag of salt crisps and said the council had pinned a notice to the lift saying it would be mended by Michaelmas, and Michaelmas had come and gone.

Her mother had told her the old story. The tower stood on the bones of a village, and the village had a well that gave water only to people who asked for it plainly. Maud had never believed in the well. She believed in stairs, and she believed that a stair was only a row of small decisions, each one lifting a foot onto the next step. So she bought a flask of tea, tied her coat at the waist, and set out on the Friday morning before the buses were running.
She counted the landings aloud. At the ninth her knees complained. At the eleventh the window onto the car park showed her the whole grey estuary, and she stopped to tell it she was not impressed. At the fourteenth she pushed open the roof door, and the wind took the breath she had left and gave it back to her, sharp and salty. Far out, a container ship moved like a comma across the water, unfinished and patient.
She did not stay long. She drank her tea, propped the door with a brick, which was not allowed, and went back down the fourteen flights to knock on the seventh-floor door. Kwame came out with crisp dust on his fingers. "It's not finished," Maud said. "It's only got as far as a comma. Come and see."
