Script quote across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single line of black cursive script across the upper back, near the shoulder blade. The thin, even linework spells out the phrase 'My mom is my angle' in a flowing handwritten style. The ink is black on warm, slightly reddened skin, and a white top strap is visible at the lower edge of the frame.

Dear Maureen, you asked why I keep the old brass bevel gauge nailed by the back door, the one with the wing nut worn bright. It was never mine to throw out. Pat Dinsdale left it behind when he went to Leeds, and the lads still call it the angle, because a joiner who says bevel gets nothing but grief for it.

The card came home on a Thursday in February, folded into quarters and smeared with someone's jam. Our Kieran had written inside it in pencil, pressing so hard the letters dented the card: My mom is my angle. Underneath, in the teacher's round biro, was Lovely work Kieran, mind the spelling. I stood in the kitchen with my coat still on and laughed until I had to sit down on the step. Then I stopped laughing, because he'd been practising that line all week and wouldn't say who'd put it in his head.
I took the card up to the workshop and laid it on the bench beside the gauge. I set the blade to the slope of the words, the long fall from the M down to the last e, and the reading came out a shade under thirty degrees. Nothing in a house sits at thirty degrees unless somebody has made it so. I thought of every cold morning I'd stood between him and the weather and how I'd never once called it anything.
I've pinned the card above the bench now, where the window light hits it sideways. Kieran says it should be angel and that I've got it wrong. I've told him an angel would never have found the time to plane a door for the church hall. He can keep his spelling. I'm keeping the other word.
