Two-panel photo showing a black script lettering quote tattoo on a person's upper back beside the shoulder blade, with a close-up of the lettering below.

Script quote across the upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The upper panel shows a person's bare upper back, seen from behind, with a small quote in black script placed beside the shoulder blade. The lower panel is a close-up of the same kind of script, reading two lines of text in smooth, even black linework with soft shading. The composition is a simple two-panel collage on a plain background, with the close-up making the lettering easy to read.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the boat is not sold, whatever Mrs Pascoe at the yard has been telling people in the Ship. I had her hauled out on the slipway at Mevagissey on Monday, and I am spending the last of the Christmas money on new planking for her transom. You will say that is foolish. Your mother said the same about the bench in the churchyard, and the bench is still there, green with moss and holding up the old men every afternoon.

I should explain about the board above the chandlery door. When your father and I were newly married, he had a sign-writer paint it in the curling hand used on the lifeboat, and it read Where you invest your love, you invest your life. He called it sentimental rubbish and paid for it all the same, the stubborn man. The paint has gone to grey, and the gulls have had their say on the capital W, but the words still show from the harbour wall if you know to look.

Last Tuesday I scraped the old varnish from the tiller and found his initials cut underneath, with the date of the February gale beside them. He had been mending her the week before he went out. I had thought the boat was abandoned long before he drowned, but he had only been waiting for the spring. Every plank I replace is another afternoon I have spent with him, and I find I do not mind the cost.

The board comes down on Friday. I have kept it. Come and help me lift it off the bracket, and bring the good plane, the one with the brass mouth. We will see what else he left us to finish.
