Script quote along a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black script phrase reading Always remember who you are is tattooed in a flowing cursive along the inner forearm, running from near the wrist towards the elbow. The lines are fine and even, with light shading giving the letters a soft, slightly softened edge. The photograph is black and white, with a dark background and a few strands of hair visible at the bottom of the frame.

Mags had the kettle on for the third time when the post van lurched up the frozen lane, its tyres hissing on the ice. Nobody at Hollin Farm got letters any more except the bank, so she went out in her slippers and took the envelope from the driver with frost already creeping into her cuffs.

The hand on the front was her mother's, rounded and stubborn, the loops of the capitals leaning as if into a gale. Inside was a single sheet folded around a photograph of the top field under snow. Her mother had written in pencil, pressing hard, the way she did when the arthritis was bad: "The ewes are in the lower barn. Tom says the beck froze solid on Tuesday. I have left the good scissors in the drawer where you'd look first, not where you'd expect."

Below that, on a line of its own and written more slowly, the ink had been gone over twice: Always remember who you are.

Mags read it standing in the doorway with the cold coming in around her. She had been planning the sale of the flock since October, the men from the auction house, the bank's polite letters, the way she had told her mother it was only sensible. Her mother had never once argued. She had simply kept hold of the scissors.

Mags folded the letter along its creases, went back into the kitchen, and poured the tea before it went cold. Then she pulled on her boots and walked out to the lower barn, where the ewes were already shouldering each other towards the warm straw.
