Script quote along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a three-line script quote in black ink on the side of the torso, reading I gave them life... they gave me a reason to live. The letters have smooth, flowing linework with varied thickness and are solid black with no visible shading. The warm lamp and background are out of focus, and the text is centred across the frame.

Sit down there, where the wall keeps the wind off you, and mind the bees, they're only curious. You want to hear about the old pear by the sundial? My memory has more holes in it than my gloves, but I'll give you what I can. That tree was a whip of a thing when Hester Brand carried it up from the cart in a damp sack. Her sister's boy had died that spring, and she couldn't bear to stand in the yard with nothing to hold.

She planted it against the south wall and staked it with a broken oar, talking to it the way some folk talk to dogs. Every frost she wrapped it in old sacking. Every dry August she carried water up from the well on a yoke, slopping half of it down her skirts. The village laughed. Pears on a wall in this weather, they said, you'd have better luck fishing with a net.

Four summers on, the thing flowered so thick the bees went drunk on it. Hester stood underneath with her arms out and said, to nobody I could see, I gave you a bit of root and a bit of rain, and look what you've given me back. Then she cried like a kettle coming to the boil, and laughed at herself for crying.

That pear is still there, though the oar rotted years ago. Pick one in October, mind the wasp in the core, and tell me it isn't sweeter than anything they sell in town.
