Butterflies and script on a shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a person's upper back and shoulder, with hair visible at the top edge of the frame. A thin black script line reads Love me for who i am, with a small butterfly above the word for and a larger shaded butterfly at the end near the shoulder edge. The lettering is crisp and fine, while the larger butterfly uses soft grey shading against warm skin tones and dark clothing.

Dorothea at the valley office had written the address in capitals, as if the mountain could not be trusted to read cursive.

Inside was a single card, folded twice, with a line in fine black ink: Love me for who i am. No name. The hand was small and slanted, the way Ilse wrote when she was learning English from the schoolmaster's primer. I had not seen her since the autumn her father sold the orchard. She had gone down to the lowlands with a suitcase and a promise to write, and the promise had kept itself quiet for eleven years.

Butterflies came over the pass that week, hundreds of them, marbled whites drifting east like scraps of paper pulled by the wind. I sat on the wall with the card on my knee and watched them stop on the wet stones to drink. One lifted off and rose higher than the rest, then turned back toward me and settled on the hem of my coat.

I wrote back on the same card, one word under hers: Yes. Then I tied it to the mule's halter and let the animal take it down the path, the way it had always taken everything I could not carry myself.
