Script quote and butterfly on the shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A fine script phrase reading "Love me for who i am" runs diagonally across the upper back near the collarbone, with a small butterfly silhouette placed within the line of text. A larger butterfly on the shoulder is shaded in grey with darker accents on its wings. The work is in black ink and greys against warm skin, and the soft, dim lighting leaves the background in shadow.

Nell Harrow had spent two winters shaping her bread to suit Tanner Lane. She made sugared twists with pink icing, little knots dusted in cinnamon, and buns with raisins arranged like the faces on a clock. The customers loved them and bought them by the dozen, and her father watched from the back room without saying a word.

One grey morning in October, a small butterfly came in under the back door, drawn by the warmth of the proving cupboard. It settled on the rim of the copper bowl and would not leave. Nell flapped a tea towel at it, and it lifted only long enough to land on her wrist, folding its wings the way a letter is folded before sealing. She had no patience for it. She had three hundred twists to shape before the first cart rattled down the lane.

But her hands stopped on the dough. Pushed to the back of the highest shelf was the dark rye her father had baked every Tuesday for forty years, plain and heavy, with nothing on it but caraway and salt. Nobody on Tanner Lane asked for it anymore. She pulled the loaf down, cut it open, and the butterfly drifted off her wrist and settled on the warm crumb, opening and closing its wings as if it had found exactly what it came for.

By eight o'clock the rye was gone, and so were most of the twists. Nell swept the flour from the step and found the butterfly on the windowsill, still and plain in the low light, and she left the back door open for it on every morning after.
