Script quote and butterflies across shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script quote running diagonally across the upper chest towards the shoulder, with a small butterfly sitting above the words. A larger butterfly with soft grey shading sits at the edge of the shoulder, and the wings are drawn with bold outlines and gentle tonal fill. The image is warm-toned and the ink is entirely black and grey against the skin, with a dark top in the lower right.

It was the second week of January, snow up to the gate hinges, and the only warm thing left on Pennick Farm was a jar of stove ash and a single red admiral that had blundered in through the hay loft. Hannah found it on the dairy sill, wings shut tight like a folded letter. She said it would be dead by morning, the way they go when the cold gets into them. So she tucked it inside her cardigan against her collarbone and went out to the ewes with her lantern.

Every time she bent over a lamb, the creature stirred against her, and every time the wind rattled the barn door she found herself talking to it. Not sweet talk. Plain talk, about the price of feed and the cow that kicked the milk pail, and the Pryce boys who had gone off to the mill towns and never sent word. She told it things she had never told the vicar. By dawn the lambs were up, and the butterfly had opened its wings to the lamp, dark at the edges and bright at the heart.

She let it go that morning from the fence post. It sat there a long while, then lifted off towards the frozen pond, and Hannah said that was the whole of the story and she would not be telling it twice.
