Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a single line of black cursive script reading everyone deserves the chance to fly, running horizontally along the side of the ribs. The letterforms are fine and evenly weighted with smooth, connected strokes. The image is in black ink only, with a teal patterned bra at the top edge and a blurred background of posters.

The sprung floor of the Majestic on Tuesday nights holds the weight of forty pairs of shoes, and you are the one on your knees with a tin of wax, working the boards back to gold. Mr Lacey, who owns the place and owes money to half of Margate, has told you twice to leave the corner by the piano alone. You leave it alone. Nobody has ever told you why.

Ada Brindle comes in at nine with a gramophone under one arm and a cracked record of a waltz in the other. She is seventy and has taught every child in the town to count three-four. She asks you to dance, and you say you have two left feet, which she says is the first honest thing anyone has told her all week. She lifts your hand onto her shoulder and counts. One, two, three. By the second bar your feet have stopped being yours and started being hers.

Halfway through the record she stops and nods at the wall above the piano, where a hand-lettered card hangs, faded to the colour of weak tea. Everyone deserves the chance to fly, it says. Her son drew those letters in 1944, the summer before he went up with the bomber crews from the airfield past the marshes, and he never came back down. Ada says it gently, the way you might mention the weather, and then she tells you to keep your eyes up and your chin level.

The next Tuesday you find the card gone from the wall. In its place there is a single white feather lying on the boards, under the lid of the piano. You put it in your top pocket. When Lacey demands to know where the card went, you tell him it has flown, and for the first time since you started working there, he laughs.
