Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Black script lettering reads 'Only god can fudge me' in a flowing, hand-drawn style across the upper back. Below the words, a thin single-line outline of a cartoon figure with spiky hair is visible, drawn without shading. The image is a close view of bare skin against a dark background, with the ink in black only.

Sit closer, the lot of you, for the wind off the moat takes the good bits and leaves you the gristle. Now, where was I? Ah yes, Brother Osric the baker, who had a chalk thumb and a tongue to match. Every loaf he sold the castle folk weighed a good half-stone less than the reeve's scales claimed, and he would swear on his mother's grave that his bread was honest.

The steward's boy, Tobin Quill, had hair that stood up like a wet hedge after a storm, and he was the only one in the keep with eyes sharp enough to catch the chalk. He stood at the back of the bakehouse one grey morning and watched Osric tip a lump of it into the dough. When the baker turned round, red as a boiled beetroot, he bellowed the thing he always bellowed when he was caught out, that nothing in heaven or earth could fudge his honest weights, and only God Himself could fudge him if He dared.

Now, the friars say God has a long memory and a short temper for liars, and that morning He was feeling particular. A crow dropped from the roof beam, took one look at the baker's loaves, and let fly with something it had been saving since Michaelmas. It landed square on Osric's crown, and the whole village swore the sky rang like a cracked bell.

That's why the bakers of this shire weigh their loaves twice, and why the crow still sits on that broken chimney up yonder, watching the ovens. Mind your step on the way out, and don't go chalking anything you wouldn't want God to weigh.
