Traditional-style colour tattoo of a blue cartoon bear wearing a bandana and holding a HUG LIFE band, placed on the ribs.

Blue cartoon bear with Hug Life belly band

Traditional · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A blue cartoon bear wearing a bandana stands with a scowling expression, holding a cream band across its belly that reads HUG LIFE. A small blue heart sits on its belly, a second heart and the word MOB appear on its raised arm, and an X mark is drawn beside the arm. Bold black outlines and flat blue fills give the bear a bright, bold look against the skin, with a small red mark visible at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Bertram had never asked for the sash. Mrs Okafor from the knitting circle stitched it for his birthday in cream wool, HUG LIFE across the front in letters that drifted uphill because she had run out of the good thread halfway through. He wore it to the bingo hall on Harbour Street anyway. Denise, who called the numbers, said a doorman needed a proper uniform, and nobody argued with Denise, least of all the gulls.

The gulls were the trouble that Thursday. One had got into the raffle tub and was making off with the winning ticket for the hamper, a tin of ham and a bottle of sherry nobody had collected since 1998. Bertram planted his feet, folded his arms so the little blue heart on his forearm flexed, and gave the bird the look he had been perfecting since his Ferry Road days, the look that once cleared a pub car park in under a minute. The gull held his gaze for a long, sour moment, then dropped the ticket at his boots and flapped off to the chip shop.

Bertram bent to pick it up and found the ticket was not a raffle ticket at all. It was a scrap of knitting pattern, folded small, with his name written on the back in purple biro and a row of hearts drawn underneath, each one a little more wobbly than the last. Across the hall, Mrs Okafor was very busy with her cardigan and not looking at him in the least.

He wore the sash to the hall the following Thursday too. Nobody mentioned the knitting, least of all Bertram, whose scowl stayed firmly in place while the tips of his ears went the colour of the bingo dabbers.
