Script quote and hamsa hand on forearms

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a person resting their chin on one hand, showing a fine black script quote running along the inner forearm. A second forearm, lower in the frame, carries a black hamsa hand with an eye and detailed mandala-style linework. The image is in natural light against a pale background, with only black ink and skin tones visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tomas, the Morwenna came in on Tuesday with her nets torn to ribbons off the Scillies, and Father has been at the mending since dawn, not speaking, just pulling twine through his fingers as if he could knot the weather shut. I have the loft to myself, and the gulls know it.

Mam's hand is still painted on the wheelhouse door where she did it the spring you left. The palm is open, the eye sits in the middle, and the little curled leaves are copied from the lace on her wedding petticoat. Skipper Rowse saw it and laughed and said it would keep the sea off him for the price of a pint. He hasn't laughed since the mast-light went. He calls it the evil eye. I call it Mam's neatest handwriting.

Above the loft door is the slate where you chalked those words at twelve, copied from a poster in the chandler's window in Penzance: fear is not an option. Father never wiped it off. This morning I stood under it with a mouthful of pins and thought that he has never once said he was afraid of the water, only that he was tired, and that is a different thing entirely.

I'm sending the small hand with this letter, traced onto tracing paper in Mam's pencil. Pin it inside your oilskin where the cuff rubs. If the tide turns against you on the way back past Wolf Rock, look down at the eye and let it look back at the water. Come home by Sunday. The kettle is already on, and the pins are in the tin.

Love, Nell.
