Small animal silhouette on upper chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a black bikini stands against a pale background, with her face cropped out of the frame. A small black silhouette of an animal sits on the upper chest near the collarbone, drawn in solid, simple shapes. The ink is the only colour in the image, and the tattoo is kept small against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At Harrow Dale the dance hall stood where the old mill had been, and every Saturday the fiddler Tom Acker played until the lamps smoked. The summer the roof was re-slated, a doe came in through the open half-door during the third reel and walked the floor between the couples as if she had been expected.

Nobody shouted. Mrs Pell set down her cup. The dancers parted, and the doe went once round the room, neat-footed, and stopped in front of Ned Carrow, who had come up from the lower farm with no partner and no wish to dance. She lowered her head to his shoulder. His mother said afterwards that he went the colour of whey, then he laughed, then he stood up.

He danced with her until the fiddle's bow began to fray. The villagers say she never once struck the boards with a hoof, and that when the church clock gave twelve she turned for the door. Ned followed her past the dark water trough and up the lane to the edge of the wood, where she stopped and looked back at him over her shoulder, the way a girl looks back at a boy she does not yet intend to forgive.

He stayed out there until morning. When he came down the lane he would not say what had happened, only that his hat was gone and his boots were wet to the knee. Every Saturday after that he sat by the half-door with his hat on his knee, and Tom Acker played the reel for him, and the room kept one space clear on the floor.
